THE DOW CHEMICAL COMPANY -  Midland, MI      (Retired)                               1989 - 2012

$50B global chemical company with 45,000 employees

 

Corporate Director of Reliability and Maintenance                                             2009 thru 2012

Responsible for $2.5 billion in Reliability and Maintenance spending across the corporation to ensure the reliable operation of assets. 

Drove the development of a culture that follows the behaviors of a Highly Reliable Organization in order to minimize the impact of unplanned events.  This was a cross-functional effort impacting all parts of the business across the corporation.  This cultural shift began in early 2010 and continues to dramatically pick up momentum across the corporation, with Reliability being named the second most important facet of the culture behind safe and environmentally responsible operation.   

Business Manufacturing Director of Dowpharma & EO/EG                                     2004 to 2009

Responsible for two businesses that included 500 people operating $3 billion in capital.

Dowpharma – a contract manufacturing business that manufactures both Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (API) and Registered Starting Materials for the Pharmaceutical industry.  Accountability included technology, quality, environmental, health and safety, operations and capital investment.   Position has the decision making authority to build internal assets, partner with others, or outsource manufacturing as needed in order to expedite speed to market and growth. 

Ethylene Oxide/Ethylene Glycol (EO/EG) – Responsible for Operations, Environmental Health and Safety, Quality and Technology for 6 world scale plants and 3 joint venture plants making EO/EG, a major commodity chemicals business. 

  • Developed a culture that minimized the impact of unplanned events and decreased the cost of unplanned events in Dowpharma by 95% and in EOEG by 70% resulting in savings in excess of $50 million per year.
  • Environmental Health and Safety Excellince in both businesses . 
  • Met or exceeded all financial targets and have been able to meet all customer needs with regards to quality and delivery of product.
  • Authorized in excess of $50 million worth of new capital for various projects.
  • Successfully launched three new API and passed 3 FDA inspections.  
  • Drove reorganization of an Operations Unit and removed 30% of the controlled structural cost out of unit operations making the Dowpharma business more profitable.

Global Business Manufacturing Director – Custom & Fine Chemicals                 2001 – 2004

Responsible for Operations for Legacy Dow plants and the integration of Ascot Corporation Operations into Dow forming a new Global Business Unit including 19 manufacturing plants in the US, UK, Germany and Belgium.     

  • Successfully completed Green Belt Certification on project to minimize the impact of unplanned events. Reduced the cost of unplanned events by 25%  (in excess of $20 million)
  • Nominated for the Dow’s People Leadership Award in 1998, 1999, 2002, 2003 and winner of Award in 2003.  
  • Instrumental member of the Union Negotiation Team for Michigan Operations that negotiated a hallmark contract in 2001 to allow global competitiveness to be re-established at this 2000 employee site.

                    Personal History

I live on an 80 acre horse ranch with my wife and two sons.  My daughters are grown and married and successful.  I have two beautiful grandchildren.  We have 8 Arabian horses, 2 Labrador Retrievers and grow our own hay.  I have a deep love of sports and gardening.  We have a small vineyard where we produce grapes and bottle our own wine.  I am an avid reader and journal daily.  Martin Luther King, Jr, Nelson Mandela and Abraham Lincoln are my historical heroes.  I was raised in the suburbs of Pittsburgh, PA.  I had the chance to play football at Carnegie Mellon University and graduated with a B.S Chemical Engineering Degree.
